Effect of Nitrogen Form and Calcium on Growth and Composition of Onion and Cucumber Plants

Abstract
The influence of Ca concentration in solution on growth and ion uptake by onion(Allium cepa L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants with NH©þ and NO©ý nutrition was investigated. Fertilization of cucumber and onion plants with NH©þ-N generally resulted in growth reduction. The effects were more pronounced on cucumber than on onion. The leaves and roots of NH©þ treated cucumber contained 60% less Ca than NO©ý plants. This effect was even more pronounced in the leaves. Calcium concn in cucumber and onion leaves rose slightly with increases in the Ca concn in the nutrition solution. On the other hand, the Mg and K composition of cucumber decreased.
